  • I hate timed levels in general, but Driver was the worst. I gave up and never played the game - probably just traded it in, I suppose. It was a long time ago. Same for original Assassin's Creed. Starts with a timed parkour chase, and I don't even see which way the target went, let alone know how to jump or climb or whatever. Another game that will sit on my shelf forever unplayed.

  • Metal gear solid 4. I couldn't wait any longer for the game to start. Pretty much the same issue as described for metal gear 5. Tutorial was not educational for gameplay, a neverending cut scene that you occasionally interacted with, and the credits. I swear the title popped up twice during credits and then more credits kept coming. I started thinking the entire game was going to just be the intro. I had to turn it off.

  • So I was a huge fan of Fallout 2, and put waaaay too many hours into it. I still fire it up now and then for nostalgia value. It's interesting that the temple in Arroyo is seen as a "tutorial / opening level" section. XD We never saw it as that back in the day, it was more of a way to test out your character build. So much so, that a high charisma character could just talk his way out of doing the trials entirely, a stealthy character could just sneak past everything, there were secrets and shortcuts and so many ways of approaching (or avoiding) the trials depending on your build, without giving away the surprises in store in the main game like being a tribal with a spear and running into folks with laser weapons and power amour, and going "wtf!?" because you were expecting to come across folks like yourself. (You're pretty much treated like crap by everyone who recognizes you as a "f**king tribal." You weren't ever really "forced" to do the trials, and even if you couldn't get out of it there was a path you could run to the exit without having to engage with much of anything. I always saw it as more of a "is this build going to cope" test. If you couldn't get through the trials with your build, you weren't going to survive a day in the wastes. Also, it was probably the shortest "tutorial" or "intro" section out of everything you've listed here, so it really wasn't nearly as tedious as you're making out. :p And to answer your question: If I recall correctly the tribe you belong to was descended from the original vault from the first game. (Which happened about 80 years prior to the sequel.) They lost their vault technologies (like their GECK and water chips), hence why they reverted back to tribal living. The temple isn't "ancient", the trials were built as a brutal test for the warriors and "Chosen Ones" of the tribe before they went out into the wastelands, which goes back to what I was saying above about it not actually being a tutorial or opening level.

  • I feel like the level that you decide to play a game at should dictate the style of the tutorial. So if you play on easy there should be a bit more hand holding but if you play on hard it should be a basic run down because the game would realize you already know what you are doing for the most part.

  • Oh what about persona 5 tutorial that takes like 30 minutes to an hour before the game officially allows you to do whatever you want, as while you in the tutorial the game won’t let you do anything you want to do or go anywhere you really want too. Like it makes sense as the game heavily is story-based, but it’s entirely unnecessarily for how long it is.

    Spudd MacgyverSpudd MacgyverUukausi sitten
  • I would actually say the intro to GTA Online... now, you are asked if you want to skip, but who is going to skip the intro their first time? And it doesn't start out bad, but.... it is what the game doesn't tell you... you are guided from your arrival at the airport to your first race, pick out a car, and race. However, once that race is over you are in the open world... and you have missions you must accomplish, but it doesn't tell you that... You must find and rob a store, you must level up. You are locked from being able to do such things as, invite a friend to join you or go on a mission with another player, until you finish this list of stuff, but you are not told that you have to finish it. If you try to do something that is not allowed the game will tell you that you need to complete the introduction, but will not tell you how to do this. And then... after you complete those missions... you MUST... quit the game and reload back in. Because when the Diamond Casino was added, Rockstar also added a mandatory commercial for the casino, this commercial will play automatically when you first join an online session, but will NOT play until after you have completed the introduction. Further, if you bought the game with the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack... you are blocked from using any of it until you have reached certain levels. They are not high levels, but for a new player to be blocked from the stuff they know they have is stupid. Example, you must be Level 6 to own an Apartment and Level 11 to join a Heist.

  • I got the original Driver on PC as a freebie from a programming competition. I played it maybe once or twice, got frustrated with the intro mission, gave up, and went back to playing GTA (the original one that just throws you out on the streets and tells you to find a phone on starting). I can also relate to the slow-paced RDR2 intro missions - I stopped playing for a bit because I just wasn't getting "in" to it, but then one day I started playing again, made it to the first hideout and was hooked - I played all the way through over the next few weeks - who knew I could be emotionally attached to a video game character?

  • I’ve beat rdr2 9 times (on my 10th) and I’ve got a tip to get past chapter 1 faster. (I don’t recommend you do this on your first play through but if you do, you can always look up a recap online) basically If you fail a section 3 times in the game, it gives you the option to skip the checkpoint. It’s still tedious but it goes by much faster. So if you purposefully fail a few times, you can basically skip the whole game if you wanted to.

But Taris is easily the most three-dimensional planet in the game and I find the sense of intrigue and mystery is at its height there, as you’re searching for Bastila and totally unsure of what your purpose is within the bigger plot.
